Impact Player and Trusted Advisor
René DeGeorge Smith is a growth-stage COO/CTO, co-founder, and operating advisor who has spent her career helping founder-led and technology-enabled organizations work through the hard moments: stalled growth, operating complexity, leadership misalignment, and the decisions that determine what a company becomes next.
Through her advisory practice, Suddenly Orange, René works with boards, investors, and management teams at critical inflection points — when a business needs to:
- scale its infrastructure
- reset its commercial strategy
- navigate a strategic transition
- unlocking stalled growth
- assisting with an operating reset
- attract institutional capital
She has worked across software, manufacturing, utilities, life sciences, healthcare, education, media, and mission-driven organizations.
René’s work is grounded in a combination: commercial discipline, technology fluency, organizational design experience, and a consistent focus on people alongside performance.
She is known for addressing hard realities directly while preserving stakeholder trust, and is frequently entrusted with executive transitions, capital reassessments, and strategic off-ramps when conditions require decisive action. Colleagues describe her as a reliable partner — with René, it is never if but how it will get decided or done.
She holds an MBA in International Business from Saint Joseph’s University, a post-graduate diploma in Systems Engineering with an AI specialization from the Université de Lausanne, and a B.S. in Finance and Management Information Systems from Drexel University.
Her international perspective extends to active engagement: she served as a Fulbright Specialist in Tajikistan designing entrepreneurship programs, participated as a delegate in Saudi Arabia’s Human Capabilities Initiative on AI and workforce development, and attended the Nobel Prize Summit on Truth, Trust, and Hope. She is a member of the Nasdaq Center for Board Excellence.
How Can I Help?
The companies I work with are usually at a moment where something isn’t working the way it should — or where the right next move isn’t yet clear. Growth has outpaced the operating model. A leadership team is misaligned. A promising product isn’t translating into revenue. A founder is facing a capital decision, succession or transition they haven’t navigated before. These are the situations where I’m most useful.
I work best as an advisory board member or as part of a small, trusted group of advisors to the CEO or board— the kind of structure where candid, ongoing counsel matters more than any single engagement. I play well in those settings. I am a practitioner, not a theorist, and I have no interest in being the loudest voice in the room. My goal is to be the person a CEO can think out loud with — and trust to be honest when it counts.
What I bring to advisory board work:
- Operating model clarity. I can quickly assess where a business’s systems, structure, or execution are misaligned with its strategy — and help build the infrastructure to fix it. I’ve done this in companies from pre-revenue to ~$10M, across multiple industries and ownership structures.
- Revenue and go-to-market discipline. I help CEOs identify where commercial momentum has stalled and what it takes to restore it — pricing, packaging, channel, team structure, or some combination.
- Capital and transition readiness. I’ve prepared companies for institutional investment, enterprise client requirements, geographic expansion, and acquisition — including positioning the leadership team for what comes after the transaction closes.
- Technology as a business lever. With a graduate specialization in AI and direct experience incorporating data, other emerging technologies, and tech-enabled systems into business operations, I help leaders make sound technology decisions without getting lost in them.
- Organizational and leadership issues. I am systems-oriented but deeply people-centered. I help CEOs think through team alignment, bench development, and the structural decisions that shape culture and performance over time.
I’m intentional about building the kind of internal capability that makes outside advisors less necessary over time — and about exiting cleanly when the work is done.
